Pucker up and get the perfect pout

Radiant Orchid: How to Wear the Color of the Year

Posted by ilovelippy on February 11, 2014

It was previously announced by Pantone — the authority on color — that the hue of 2014 would be Radiant Orchid: “A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones,” as expressed on the Pantone website. The good news? Unlike years past of emerald and tangerine, this color is totally wearable on the lips for … wait for it … everyone. Rarely does a color come along that compliments all skin tones, but there is always a first for everything.

Wondering how to incorporate Radiant Orchid into your everyday and special-day lippy wear? Here’s how to make your lips radiant, and the products to help you get there.

Lips, Cheeks, Eyes

Any purple color on your lips will make a statement, so you want to be sure its complemented by a more neutral palette on the cheeks and eyes. For the cheeks, dust a very light rosy pink to keep the look soft. For eyes, skip the shadow and opt for liner and mascara combination. Or, simply sweep on highlighter to cover circles, or under the brows to create lift and shine. This will make your lip color  pop, and help you avoid a Bozo the Clown identity crisis.

Radiant Orchid-like Lippies We Love

Sephora + Pantone Universe Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick will bring lips the truest version of this color. Bonus: the formula contains collagen for an extra plumping boost. When using a bold matte lipstick (i.e., lippy sans shine), it’s crucial that lips remain moisturized, or every crack will show. Check out our post on winter weather care to keep lips soft and flake-free.

For a glossier version, try Shiseido Luminizing Lip Gloss in Cool. This light lilac moisturizing gloss is a more subtle purple for the Radiant Orchid rookie, and will add some much-needed shine to your cold-weather pout. Bonus: You won’t need to worry about having purple lipstick on your teeth.

ImageFor a true statement-making lip, pair makeup with a black or nude wardrobe. Now, prepare for all the attention to be on your mouth. Who knows, it may even help your husband listen more closely to what you say!

Easy Winter Weather Lip Care

Posted by ilovelippy on February 10, 2014

Hi lippy lovers! Miss me? After a long hiatus to take care of my new daughter, I am back with the latest and greatest lippy tips and advice.

Here in the northeast, I’ve been dealing with a polar vortex, snowstorms every three days, and terrible heating that has wreaked havoc on my lips. Harsh winter weather should never prevent your lips from continuing to look their glossy, pink, healthy best. All you need are a few extra products and a couple more minutes to keep your lips looking fresh and kissable. Follow my simple winter lippy routine and kiss flaky chapped lips farewell for good.

Step 1: Moisturize From Within

Yes, lip care is certainly about the conditioning products you put on your lips. But just like your skin, your lips need to be hydrated from the inside out. Drink plenty of water (8 cups a day) with a combination of fruits and veggies with a high concentration of H2O, such as grapefruit, pineapple, blueberries, carrots, celery and zucchini.

Step 2: Exfoliate and Buff

You may use an exfoliating wash on your body in the shower, so why not do the same for your lips? A lip exfoliant is a great way to condition your pucker while removing dead skin and flakes. Sugar Lip Polish by Fresh takes seconds to apply by massaging with the tip of your finger, and contains conditioning ingredients such as shea butter and jojoba oils that leaves lips feeling soft.

Step 3: Your Perfect Lip Balm

Now that you have a fresh base to work with, it’s time to really moisturize. Since winter weather means harsh winds, a mix of cold air and indoor heat, and sun reflecting off the snow, your lip care needs to work triple duty. Aquaphor Lip Repair with SPF 30 seems to start healing lips on impact and continues to heal with ingredients like Vitamin E and Chamomile. You’ll be left with a subtle shine that looks glossy, not balmy. Plus, Aquaphor products are great for even the most sensitive skin (hint: my daughter’s pediatrician recommends only their products for sensitive baby skin).

Step 4: Beautify

Now, the really fun part. Winter lips tend to look dry and pasty, so you’ll want to put a little color back onto your pout. Too much though, and the cracks may start to show (even despite your strict lip regimen!) If you’re not Taylor Swift or Christina Aguilera, a fresh rose-colored moisturizing gloss will do the trick. L’Oreal Colour Riche Gloss in Rich Pink will nourish lips with its Omega-3 and Vitamin E ingredients while providing lips with a soft tint to hide any signs of winter distress.

ImageWhile the winter weather continues on, this beauty regimen can give you at least one reason to smile.

Moving? Makeup Bag Lippy Essentials

Posted by ilovelippy on November 15, 2011

Lippy lovers, I apologize for being a bit flaky these past few weeks (not on my lips, of course, but with my postings, or lack thereof). I’m taking the plunge and moving out of NYC into the (very) nearby suburbs of New Jersey – and I mean right outside of the tunnel. Of course, this move has occupied much of my time, but as I’ve been boxing up my belongings the past few weeks, it forced me to make the important decision of – what do I need now versus what do I want. What can be boxed up for two to three weeks, and what must I have now, which includes my makeup products, and specifically, lippies. If you’ve found yourself in this predicament (and if you’re anything like me and normally have at least 10 lippies on-hand), here are my recommendations for four must-have makeup bag lippy essentials.

1. A clear gloss. A good, clear gloss does more than make lips shine: It actually gives lips the illusion of looking fuller, since the shine in the gloss reflects light and creates dimension. I recently became slightly addicted to Sephora’s Clear Glossy Gloss. While it doesn’t have the staying power of comparables like Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss or MAC Clear Lipglass, it does have just as much shine and comes in a more non-sticky formula (the reason behind a longer lasting gloss).

2. A moisturizing balm. This may seem like an obvious choice, but many may substitute this staple for a clear gloss. While some glosses do have moisturizing ingredients, they’re still a gloss and their main purpose is not to moisturize. For an anytime balm that creates serious smoothness, both in application and aftermath, try Nivea A Kiss of Smoothness. It leaves lips feeling super nourished with just a hint of shine.

3. A signature, go-to colored gloss. A color I think works on everyone is a sheer coral, which can be layered nicely with your clear gloss if you desire extra shine. This gloss can be worn during the day — in the office or walking around town. Try Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Pur in Pure Coral.

4. A signature, go-to lipstick. You’re bound to be going out at night at least once in the time that you’re on-the-move, so it’s crucial to have one color that can work with almost any outfit choice. Since you could be wearing anything from navy to red to turquoise to berry, now isn’t the best time to pick the most adventurous color. Instead, like choosing a hair color, stick with a shade no more than two hues away from your natural lip color, such as rose or beige. Remember, if you choose a more natural color, you can really play up your eyes with dramatic liner and lashes. Try Revlon Colorburst Lipstick, which leaves lips feeling creamy yet light.

Birthday Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on November 2, 2011

While some people tend to shy away from birthday parties and the pressure of being the center of attention, I for one love a good celebration. And while being the center of the world for a day can be fun, it’s really my lips that I want to be the center of attention. As I celebrate the fact that I am entering my 30s on November 7th, which will be preceded by a “welcome to my 30s” bash this Friday, one thing is for sure. In the words of the fabulous Real Housewives of New Jersey resident Melissa Gorga, I want to put my lips “on display, on display, on display.” With that, here, my suggestions for birthday lippy for a standout pout.

Start Shimmering. Just because we’re aging doesn’t mean our lips need to. The easiest way to reclaim your youth is to add as much glitter and sparkle to your look as possible. Fortunately, we’re able to do that without needing to shop at Claire’s. As you’re dancing into the evening, your lips will shine like the disco ball lights. Try Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss in the color that best matches your outfit (I love Pink Sequin for my fair skin). This product packs in some serious sparkle.

Be Bold. There is no better time to try out that fire-engine red you’ve been dying to apply than for a special occasion like your birthday. Bright red lips is the first way to get immediately noticed for all the right reasons. Go for a long-lasting wear, since you’ll be partying into the wee hours of the morning. Try: Christian Dior, Rouge Dior in Rouge Blossom. It won’t wear off easily and will keep lips smooth — not cracking — which is crucial for red lipstick.

Stay Simple. If you can’t be bothered with a fussy look while you’re kissing cheeks and sipping cocktails, go for a simple, clear shine that keeps lips looking moisturized and healthy, without a lot of work. Try DuWop Lip Venom, which imparts a natural, clear shine while seriously plumping lips with ingredients including cinnamon, wintergreen and ginger.

Easy Ways to Improve Your Smile

Posted by ilovelippy on October 26, 2011

Did you know the majority of men are attracted to a woman’s sense of humor and her warm, flirtatious smile? Yet most women are more concerned with their hair or facial appearance. The reality is, people tend to notice particularly nice smiles — or particularly unattractive ones. A smile full of yellowing teeth can throw off even the most beautiful women. It’s a bit unpleasant to think about, but it’s also quite common — some people simply don’t know how to keep their teeth clean, white and healthy. For some help with this, and for information on consulting dental professionals, check out www.TopDentists.com. In the meantime, here are a few easy ways to keep your teeth white, and your smile beautiful.

  • Identify the culprits. The first step is to avoid habits that dirty your teeth. For example, smoking is a major cause of stained or dirty teeth. Additionally, some foods and drinks, such as blueberries, soda and coffee, can have a long-term staining effect on teeth. If you can’t fully cut back on these, make sure to brush your teeth immediately after consuming these foods and drinks.
  • Stock up on smile-friendly foods. There are also foods that can help to keep your teeth strong, healthy and bright. For example, foods that are rich in calcium, such as dairy products, strengthen your bones — including teeth. Even some teas on the market can help, as tea leaves are rich in calcium. Fruits such as lemons and other citrus varieties can also serve as natural whiteners for teeth. It’s not a complete fix, but hey, can’t hurt to try.
  • Try teeth whiteners. Changing your brushing habits can help you to whiten teeth. Many people turn to baking soda, which is proven to have a certain polishing affect on teeth. Brushing with only baking soda can be a bit uncomfortable, so look into baking soda-based toothpastes.

If you have a real staining problem, or if you simply want to ensure the most healthy and beautiful smile you can get, consider taking your routine a step further and talk to a dental professional. There are tooth cleaning and cosmetic dentistry methods specifically designed to enhance and preserve whiteness, and you would do well to inquire about them if this is a concern of yours.

Now smile, beautiful!

Halloween Costumes That Go Great With Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on October 20, 2011

Halloween celebrations will begin next week, when the boys will be slackers with their costumes and the ladies will use this day as an excuse to grab their shortest skirts and tightest top. If you don’t have your costume ready yet, why not build one based on your favorite lippy color? Here are some ideas for trendy Halloween costumes that incorporate lip colors for fall.

1. Vampire: With the popularity of “True Blood” and the premiere of “Breaking Dawn” just weeks away, grab your fake teeth and some blood-red lipstick for the vampire costume. Use powder to make your face appear pale, throw on a bit of black mascara and fill in your lips with a deep red matte lipstick (think female version of Edward Cullen). Try: Tarte for True Blood™ Limited-Edition LipSurgence™ Natural Lip Tint. This red shade, inspired by the hit show, will provide lips with a natural tint of of red. It’ll be a bloody good costume (as they say in England).

2. Sexy Pumpkin. We all know by now that burnt orange, or versions of the shade, are hot for fall. Incorporate this this trend into your costume by dressing as a sexy pumpkin. Monochromatic dressing can be very slimming, and this color on the lips works surprisingly well with almost every skin tone. Top your look with a cute green hat. Think pumpkins can’t be sexy? Skip the puffy figure-unflattering look and instead, dress in orange and carry a cute pumpkin purse or clip a charm onto your purse, like the one designed by Juicy Couture. Last but certainly not least, for your shade of orange lippy, try: Nars lip gloss in Wonder (sheer mandarin orange with pink and gold shimmer).

3. 80s chick. The 80s are back — well, they have been for a while. So why not really channel that carefree, get-up-and-dance decade with a side ponytail, legwarmers and a cut T-shirt, topped with neon makeup and fuchsia lippy. Try: Benefit ultra shines lip shine in back to the fuchsia. The color is a perfect shade of hot pink (80s style) and the shimmer will take lips to the next level. Besides, who doesn’t think glitter and shimmer when thinking about the 80s?

Happy Halloween!

Is Butter-flavored Lip Balm the New Trend?

Posted by ilovelippy on October 19, 2011

The only time I like butter is when it’s melted on my toast. And if there’s too much or if it’s clumpy, I won’t eat it. The site of unmelted butter makes me a bit queasy. So when I discovered that Food Network chef Paula Deen is selling butter-flavored lip balm, I nearly gagged. That’s right, the queen of southern cooking is selling this flavored lip balm in her Savannah, Ga. retail store, in addition to peach cobbler, pecan pie, pumpkin pie and other pie and pudding flavored lip balm. Now as you know from previous posts, I’m not anti-flavored lip balm. I think vanilla, chocolate and even candy-flavored balms can be enjoyable for you and your kissing mate, particularly since we ingest pounds of lip products over our lifetime. But does butter cross the line? Are we promoting this heart-clogging condiment a little too much?

Brilliant and Fun Lippy Packaging

Posted by ilovelippy on October 10, 2011

When walking into Sephora or my local drug store with the intention of seeking out a new favorite lippy, one of the things that reels me in is some of the creative packaging ideas companies are using to get me to buy their product. And let me tell you, it’s working. Here are some of my favorite beauty brands and their genius ideas for making their lippies unique.

Urban Decay Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss not only lets you undress your man with a swivel of the tube (thanks to hologram technology), but it’s super slim, so it won’t bulge if you need to carry it in your pocket (or small makeup bag). This lip gloss, which comes in three shades, goes on super smooth sans stick (now, try applying and saying that 10 times fast).

Balmshell Lip Gloss comes in very unique packaging. Depending on the shade you chose (from sheer milky pink to vibrant lavender to clear glitter), the tube contains a moving illustration with a story line. Example: Shopaholic is the story of a woman who has an addiction — ahem — to shopping…most likely for lip gloss. She goes into a boutique for a few things, and comes out with her doorman carrying her purchases. Once you’ve used up all the lip gloss, the handle can be unscrewed and re-attached to the keychain that comes with the product.  It’s super cute, a good conversation starter and comes in a variety of colors — and stories.

This next one isn’t as much about packaging as it is about being brilliant and thoughtful to women’s needs. Philosophy Amazing Grace  pink lip gloss and roll-on fragrance duo is genius for us on-the-go girls. Heading out to a date right after work? Slick on this pretty pink lip gloss and roll on this clean and feminine scent in your cab ride and you’ll be ready to go.
