Moving? Makeup Bag Lippy Essentials

Posted by ilovelippy on November 15, 2011

Lippy lovers, I apologize for being a bit flaky these past few weeks (not on my lips, of course, but with my postings, or lack thereof). I’m taking the plunge and moving out of NYC into the (very) nearby suburbs of New Jersey – and I mean right outside of the tunnel. Of course, this move has occupied much of my time, but as I’ve been boxing up my belongings the past few weeks, it forced me to make the important decision of – what do I need now versus what do I want. What can be boxed up for two to three weeks, and what must I have now, which includes my makeup products, and specifically, lippies. If you’ve found yourself in this predicament (and if you’re anything like me and normally have at least 10 lippies on-hand), here are my recommendations for four must-have makeup bag lippy essentials.

1. A clear gloss. A good, clear gloss does more than make lips shine: It actually gives lips the illusion of looking fuller, since the shine in the gloss reflects light and creates dimension. I recently became slightly addicted to Sephora’s Clear Glossy Gloss. While it doesn’t have the staying power of comparables like Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss or MAC Clear Lipglass, it does have just as much shine and comes in a more non-sticky formula (the reason behind a longer lasting gloss).

2. A moisturizing balm. This may seem like an obvious choice, but many may substitute this staple for a clear gloss. While some glosses do have moisturizing ingredients, they’re still a gloss and their main purpose is not to moisturize. For an anytime balm that creates serious smoothness, both in application and aftermath, try Nivea A Kiss of Smoothness. It leaves lips feeling super nourished with just a hint of shine.

3. A signature, go-to colored gloss. A color I think works on everyone is a sheer coral, which can be layered nicely with your clear gloss if you desire extra shine. This gloss can be worn during the day — in the office or walking around town. Try Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Pur in Pure Coral.

4. A signature, go-to lipstick. You’re bound to be going out at night at least once in the time that you’re on-the-move, so it’s crucial to have one color that can work with almost any outfit choice. Since you could be wearing anything from navy to red to turquoise to berry, now isn’t the best time to pick the most adventurous color. Instead, like choosing a hair color, stick with a shade no more than two hues away from your natural lip color, such as rose or beige. Remember, if you choose a more natural color, you can really play up your eyes with dramatic liner and lashes. Try Revlon Colorburst Lipstick, which leaves lips feeling creamy yet light.

Birthday Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on November 2, 2011

While some people tend to shy away from birthday parties and the pressure of being the center of attention, I for one love a good celebration. And while being the center of the world for a day can be fun, it’s really my lips that I want to be the center of attention. As I celebrate the fact that I am entering my 30s on November 7th, which will be preceded by a “welcome to my 30s” bash this Friday, one thing is for sure. In the words of the fabulous Real Housewives of New Jersey resident Melissa Gorga, I want to put my lips “on display, on display, on display.” With that, here, my suggestions for birthday lippy for a standout pout.

Start Shimmering. Just because we’re aging doesn’t mean our lips need to. The easiest way to reclaim your youth is to add as much glitter and sparkle to your look as possible. Fortunately, we’re able to do that without needing to shop at Claire’s. As you’re dancing into the evening, your lips will shine like the disco ball lights. Try Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss in the color that best matches your outfit (I love Pink Sequin for my fair skin). This product packs in some serious sparkle.

Be Bold. There is no better time to try out that fire-engine red you’ve been dying to apply than for a special occasion like your birthday. Bright red lips is the first way to get immediately noticed for all the right reasons. Go for a long-lasting wear, since you’ll be partying into the wee hours of the morning. Try: Christian Dior, Rouge Dior in Rouge Blossom. It won’t wear off easily and will keep lips smooth — not cracking — which is crucial for red lipstick.

Stay Simple. If you can’t be bothered with a fussy look while you’re kissing cheeks and sipping cocktails, go for a simple, clear shine that keeps lips looking moisturized and healthy, without a lot of work. Try DuWop Lip Venom, which imparts a natural, clear shine while seriously plumping lips with ingredients including cinnamon, wintergreen and ginger.

Halloween Costumes That Go Great With Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on October 20, 2011

Halloween celebrations will begin next week, when the boys will be slackers with their costumes and the ladies will use this day as an excuse to grab their shortest skirts and tightest top. If you don’t have your costume ready yet, why not build one based on your favorite lippy color? Here are some ideas for trendy Halloween costumes that incorporate lip colors for fall.

1. Vampire: With the popularity of “True Blood” and the premiere of “Breaking Dawn” just weeks away, grab your fake teeth and some blood-red lipstick for the vampire costume. Use powder to make your face appear pale, throw on a bit of black mascara and fill in your lips with a deep red matte lipstick (think female version of Edward Cullen). Try: Tarte for True Blood™ Limited-Edition LipSurgence™ Natural Lip Tint. This red shade, inspired by the hit show, will provide lips with a natural tint of of red. It’ll be a bloody good costume (as they say in England).

2. Sexy Pumpkin. We all know by now that burnt orange, or versions of the shade, are hot for fall. Incorporate this this trend into your costume by dressing as a sexy pumpkin. Monochromatic dressing can be very slimming, and this color on the lips works surprisingly well with almost every skin tone. Top your look with a cute green hat. Think pumpkins can’t be sexy? Skip the puffy figure-unflattering look and instead, dress in orange and carry a cute pumpkin purse or clip a charm onto your purse, like the one designed by Juicy Couture. Last but certainly not least, for your shade of orange lippy, try: Nars lip gloss in Wonder (sheer mandarin orange with pink and gold shimmer).

3. 80s chick. The 80s are back — well, they have been for a while. So why not really channel that carefree, get-up-and-dance decade with a side ponytail, legwarmers and a cut T-shirt, topped with neon makeup and fuchsia lippy. Try: Benefit ultra shines lip shine in back to the fuchsia. The color is a perfect shade of hot pink (80s style) and the shimmer will take lips to the next level. Besides, who doesn’t think glitter and shimmer when thinking about the 80s?

Happy Halloween!

Fall 2011 Lip Color Trends

Posted by ilovelippy on September 8, 2011

As the first week of September soon comes to a close, we’re quickly on our way to cooler temperatures, which means fall is right around the corner. Not knocking down our door just yet, but is pretty close. On the bright side, the beauty of the changing leaves (think burnt orange and red) can be reflected in our lip palettes. Here’s another fun surprise: you don’t really need to open your wallet and start from scratch to be on-trend for the season. Yay for not needing to spend more money!

Here’s a look at what your should be wearing on your lips this fall, as seen on the fall runways of some top designers

Alice + Olivia painted the lips of models a bright, bold red. This look is great for pairing with darker colors of fall fashion, like navy, to really make lips pop. For a good fall look, go for a matte lipstick like NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Mascate (bold red).

Bottega Veneta went the nude route by pairing with a heavy lined eye and colorful fashions like burnt orange. To get the nude lip without looking sickly, try a lipstick with some shine or shimmer, like Korres Mango Butter Lipstick in Nude 33. It’s conditioning ingredients and glossy finish will make lips look healthy — not starved for moisture or color.

Carolina Herrera took the pink lip of summer and transformed it into fall with one simple thing: matte. Take your bright pink lipstick from spring/summer, blot and you’re ready to go. Try Illamasqua Lipstick in Corrupt (matte hot pink) to get this look with one easy swipe.

Gucci played it safe for fall by going with a commonly seen lip palette during this season: dark, deep reddish/brown. As your tan fades, this can be a tough color to pull off, so it may be best left for those with some color to their skin tone (us translucent ladies may want to pass). To get this look, try Stila Long Wear Lip Color in Phenomenal (reddish brown). It’s pencil-like applicator will help you easily hit the outline of your lips.

Jill Stuart played up the color for fall: tangerine. Don’t be scared, surprisingly this is a color many of us can pull off. It goes great with a peachy cheek, just don’t overdose with and orange top. I recommend a gloss or sheer lippy for this color, since it’s already very bold. Once you’ve become a tangerine veteran, you can move onto the lipstick phase. Check out Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in tangerine, which has an added extra of being ever so slightly scented with vanilla.

Are you falling for fall’s colors yet?

How-to Remove Lipstick Stains

Posted by ilovelippy on August 10, 2011

Picture it: You’re all ready for a summer night on the town. You’re about to put on your favorite white-hot summer dress when – gasp! You completely forgot you just applied lippy (you’re such an addict you don’t even realize when you apply it) and now the stain is the kiss of death for your dress. If lipstick or lip gloss stains got your down, chin up. We asked expert Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Guide to Laundry, our most pressing lippy stain removal questions.

1. What immediate steps should you take if you get lipstick on your clothing?

For fresh stains, if there is a large quantity of lipstick — a glob — on top of the fabric, use a dull knife or spoon to gently remove the excess. Try not to press the stain deeper into the fabric. If you can’t launder the garment right away, use a stain removal pen or wipe to treat the stain. Follow the instructions on the product and be sure to test it first in an inconspicuous place to make sure it does not discolor the fabric. Launder your garment or take it to a dry cleaner as soon as possible. If it must be dry cleaned, be sure to tell the cleaner about the stain and any treatment you have used.

To launder at home, use an enzyme based pre-treater, (like ShoutZout or Vaska Spotoff) following package directions. Then, rub with heavy-duty liquid detergent or a paste made of powdered detergent and water. Scrub stain lightly and rinse in hot water. Next, wash in the hottest water suitable for the fabric using detergent and an all-fabric bleach to remove the dye in the stain.

2. Is there a difference between caring for lipstick versus lip gloss stains?

All colored lip products make a combination stain of dye and an oil or wax base.  The stain removal techniques are the same for every product. If it is simply a non-colored lip gloss, you still need to use the same treatment.

3. Are there any products you would recommend, or DIY stain removers?

In addition to the steps listed above, if you have a lipstick stain that was not treated and was then washed and dried you will need to do a bit more work. Mix a solution of oxygen-based bleach (OxiClean, Clorox 2, Country Save Bleach or Ultra Purex Color Safe Bleach) and water following the package directions. Completely submerge the garment and allow it to soak overnight. Check the stained area and if it is gone, wash as usual. If the stain remains, mix a new solution and soak for another 12 hours. Repeat until stain is gone.

5. Are certain colors easier to remove than others?

Lighter lipstick colors are slightly easier to remove since the dye is not as intense. Of course, it all depends on the color of the base fabric!

So lippy lovers, there you have it. And remember, before you start your regular laundry, always check your pants pockets for lippy.

Lipstick I Can’t Wait For

Posted by ilovelippy on July 28, 2011

Fashion goes with beauty like peanut butter goes with jelly. One without the other just doesn’t seem complete. A woman with a killer handbag will almost always have a killer lip gloss on her lips and in her purse. Now, two powerful women in the fashion world are dipping their toes in the beauty pool.

Handbag-slash-scarf queen, Kate Spade, is teaming up with Australian lipstick maker Poppy King to launch “Supercalifragilipstick” (loving the name, although a mouthful) in September. The product will be available in sleek gold tubes, with colors ranging from Adventurous Red to Fuchsia Fete to Pop Art Pink.

Rachel Zoe, the woman behind your favorite celebrity’s style, is also launching a line of lipstick called Exude. What’s so special about Exude? We’re not sure yet, although it’s claiming to be the “newest lipstick phenomenon…[that will] revolutionize the way a woman applies her lipstick.” Well, that caught my attention — she does know how to make a woman look great fashion-wise.

Looking forward to trying both ladies’ lippy lines. Will you?

The Perfectionist Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on July 27, 2011

Most of us don’t sit at home while we apply lippy; we’re usually at the office, at dinner, at a bar, at a party…you get the gist. While we may apply our initial coat in front of the bathroom mirror, unless you’ve chosen a long-lasting lippy, it’s inevitable that you’ll need to reapply while on-the-go. If you don’t want to end up with an uneven lip product application, try one of these lippies with a built-in mirror, making application a cinch.

Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Balms, available at Sephora, are available in colors that will take  you on a great escape from Bora Bora (a sheer cherry red) to St. Barth (a sheer lilac sheen) to Waikiki (a sheer bright pink). Not only do these balms have a built-in mirror, but it also hydrates and smooths lips with ingredients like vitamin C and E.

For a lipstick splurge, Guerlain Rouge G Le Brilliant comes in a handy compact which contains a “hidden” mini-mirror that allows for easy application. Available in a variety of shades, the downside is the $45 price tag.

For “mirror-like” shine, look no further than Philosophy Angel Kiss Lip Gloss, in the color of grace. I’m a fan of subtle pink lips, and this product glides on pretty smoothly.

Of course, you could just opt to carry around a separate purse-sized mirror, but what fun is that?
