Birthday Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on November 2, 2011

While some people tend to shy away from birthday parties and the pressure of being the center of attention, I for one love a good celebration. And while being the center of the world for a day can be fun, it’s really my lips that I want to be the center of attention. As I celebrate the fact that I am entering my 30s on November 7th, which will be preceded by a “welcome to my 30s” bash this Friday, one thing is for sure. In the words of the fabulous Real Housewives of New Jersey resident Melissa Gorga, I want to put my lips “on display, on display, on display.” With that, here, my suggestions for birthday lippy for a standout pout.

Start Shimmering. Just because we’re aging doesn’t mean our lips need to. The easiest way to reclaim your youth is to add as much glitter and sparkle to your look as possible. Fortunately, we’re able to do that without needing to shop at Claire’s. As you’re dancing into the evening, your lips will shine like the disco ball lights. Try Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss in the color that best matches your outfit (I love Pink Sequin for my fair skin). This product packs in some serious sparkle.

Be Bold. There is no better time to try out that fire-engine red you’ve been dying to apply than for a special occasion like your birthday. Bright red lips is the first way to get immediately noticed for all the right reasons. Go for a long-lasting wear, since you’ll be partying into the wee hours of the morning. Try: Christian Dior, Rouge Dior in Rouge Blossom. It won’t wear off easily and will keep lips smooth — not cracking — which is crucial for red lipstick.

Stay Simple. If you can’t be bothered with a fussy look while you’re kissing cheeks and sipping cocktails, go for a simple, clear shine that keeps lips looking moisturized and healthy, without a lot of work. Try DuWop Lip Venom, which imparts a natural, clear shine while seriously plumping lips with ingredients including cinnamon, wintergreen and ginger.

Lippies for Breast Cancer Awareness

Posted by ilovelippy on October 6, 2011

October doesn’t just mean it’s time to change your lip palette for fall (although that is a part of it). It’s national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bringing awareness to a disease that affects 1 in 8 women in the United States, or 12 percent of women, and was diagnosed in over 200,000 women last year. The question then is, why wouldn’t you show your support? I have a simple solution for all of you lippy lovers. During the month of October, instead of purchasing any old lip product, look for ones offered by a variety of brands that support breast cancer awareness and research in some ways. Here are a few to get you started.

During the month of October, Shiseido will donate $5 to CEW Cancer and Careers for every unit of their Shimmering Rouge in Iron Maiden purchase. This is a great color that imparts a subtle shimmer to lips, without drying them out.

Bobbi Brown (a favorite cosmetics company) has created a pink ribbon lip set, which includes their pink lip color and Bellini High Shimmer lip gloss. With each purchase, $10 will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I love the creaminess of Bobbi Brown’s lip products.

Clinique, on the other hand, is working to educate its customers about the risks of breast cancer. With every purchase of any product during October, Clinique is offering a free pink ribbon pin plus an information card with key breast-health tips. These days, I can’t live without my Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Woppin’ Watermelon. It leaves my lips with a natural, very subtle pretty pink hue.

Lastly, a fun, fav lip balm I own and love is helping the cause. Evolution of Smooth (EOS) will donate 5 percent of all U.S. sales of their Smooth Sphere Lip Balm to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Think pink and go for their new Strawberry Sorbet scent.

What are you waiting for? Go help women in need!

Kisses and thoughts to those who have been affecting by this disease,

Fall 2011 Lip Color Trends

Posted by ilovelippy on September 8, 2011

As the first week of September soon comes to a close, we’re quickly on our way to cooler temperatures, which means fall is right around the corner. Not knocking down our door just yet, but is pretty close. On the bright side, the beauty of the changing leaves (think burnt orange and red) can be reflected in our lip palettes. Here’s another fun surprise: you don’t really need to open your wallet and start from scratch to be on-trend for the season. Yay for not needing to spend more money!

Here’s a look at what your should be wearing on your lips this fall, as seen on the fall runways of some top designers

Alice + Olivia painted the lips of models a bright, bold red. This look is great for pairing with darker colors of fall fashion, like navy, to really make lips pop. For a good fall look, go for a matte lipstick like NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Mascate (bold red).

Bottega Veneta went the nude route by pairing with a heavy lined eye and colorful fashions like burnt orange. To get the nude lip without looking sickly, try a lipstick with some shine or shimmer, like Korres Mango Butter Lipstick in Nude 33. It’s conditioning ingredients and glossy finish will make lips look healthy — not starved for moisture or color.

Carolina Herrera took the pink lip of summer and transformed it into fall with one simple thing: matte. Take your bright pink lipstick from spring/summer, blot and you’re ready to go. Try Illamasqua Lipstick in Corrupt (matte hot pink) to get this look with one easy swipe.

Gucci played it safe for fall by going with a commonly seen lip palette during this season: dark, deep reddish/brown. As your tan fades, this can be a tough color to pull off, so it may be best left for those with some color to their skin tone (us translucent ladies may want to pass). To get this look, try Stila Long Wear Lip Color in Phenomenal (reddish brown). It’s pencil-like applicator will help you easily hit the outline of your lips.

Jill Stuart played up the color for fall: tangerine. Don’t be scared, surprisingly this is a color many of us can pull off. It goes great with a peachy cheek, just don’t overdose with and orange top. I recommend a gloss or sheer lippy for this color, since it’s already very bold. Once you’ve become a tangerine veteran, you can move onto the lipstick phase. Check out Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in tangerine, which has an added extra of being ever so slightly scented with vanilla.

Are you falling for fall’s colors yet?

Glitter Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on August 10, 2011

Kesha said this about glitter: “That’s right. I’ve found glitter in places that will not be named in this interview.” Although Kesha’s glitter obsession is a bit extreme, glitter is showing up on the eyes, lips, cheeks and decolletage of celebrities hitting the red carpets. From Emma Watson’s coppery-gold glitter eye shadow to glitter nail polish seen everywhere, summer shimmer is what it’s all about. So why not add some sparkle to you lips? It’s the perfect party look.

Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss is the ultimate in glittery gorgeousness. One look at the product and you know you’re guarantee enough sparkle people may confuse you with the disco ball you’re dancing under. It’s made with fine pearls and clear pigments to give your lips the brilliance you desire, and contains moisturizing vitamins to protect lips.

For a cheaper alternative without overly sacrificing quality, try NYX Cosmetics Diamond Sparkle Lip Gloss. It shows up like little crystals on your lips, with rich color, like orange sparkle and bronze sparkle.  The gloss is smooth — not sticky — so you can feel comfortable conversing at your parties.

All that glitters is gold.

Make Your Lips Look Younger

Posted by ilovelippy on June 22, 2011

Lip wrinkles, among other things, are an easy way to tell someone’s age, as well as whether they smoke or spend a lot of time in the sun. Fortunately, there are several very simple steps you can take to prevent and reverse the signs of lip aging. Here are top tips for making lips look more youthful.

1. Color: Our lips lose color as we age, so it’s crucial to always keep a subtle lip color on hand, that stays within two shades of your normal color. We’re talking a whisper of color here — not a scream. After all, pale lips can make you look tired and — surprise – pale in the face. Try Bobbi Brown’s Glitter Lip Balm Palette for just a hint of color and shimmer.

2. Condition. Dry lips tend to look more wrinkled – an easy indicator of age. Be sure you’re moisturizing lips throughout the day and before bed (especially if you sleep with your mouth open). Check out I Love Lippy’s best lip moisturizers for protection and healing.

3. Find Antioxidants. You’ve most likely heard about eating foods with antioxidants, such as green tea, salmon and almonds. Antioxidants protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals, which can include sigsn of aging. Look for products that contain antioxidants, such as Anastasia HydraFull Gloss.

4. Exfoliate. The skin of lips contain three to five layers – less than the face, but still needing attention. Exfoliate lips just as you would any other body part, to get rid of dead, dry, flaky skin. Try Smashbox Emulsion Lip Exfoliant.

5. Use SPF. I’ve told you once and I’ll tell you again. Particularly in the summer, it is so essential that you use lip products containing SPF, to protect lips against burn, or worse. Check out I Love Lippy’s Sun-protecting Lippy post.

6. Plump. An international study funded by Unilever showed that full lips make individuals appear younger, since lips thin out as we age. Before you run to the doctor to get lip injections, try one of the hundreds of lip plumpers on the market, such as Sally Hansen PM Lip Plumper, which can help do the job in your sleep!

How to Wear Fuchsia Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on May 11, 2011

There’s no denying the hot lip color for spring right now is fuchsia. If you want to go bold and experiment with this vivid hue, there are a few rules to first follow. To wear fuchsia lippy:

1. Use black around the eye. Using any colored eye shadow or mascara while wearing fuchsia lippy will put too much color on your face. Instead, opt for black eye makeup, and even when using black, go easy on the eye makeup to be easy on the eyes.

Favorite fuchsia lippy #1: Korres Liquid Lipstick in Fuchsia. It looks like a lip gloss, feels like a lip gloss, is applied like a lip gloss, but has the finish of a lipstick. Plus, it contains moisturizing Acai Palm Pulp Oil.

4. Hydrate, exfoliate. When you wear a bright color like fuchsia on your lips, it’s one of the first things people will notice about you. So how embarrassing will it be if your fuchsia lips are cracked, flaking or peeling? Before applying color, make sure you moisturize lips with a super moisturizer (see: i love lippy’s Best Moisturizing Lip Balms). Exfoliate lips every few days by gently brushing with a clean, dry toothbrush in circular motion. Then apply, without fear of unsightly fuchsia flaking.

Favorite fuchsia lippy #2: Benefit Ultra Shines Lip Shine in back to the fuchsia. This shimmery color is great for girls who want to transition into the fuchsia world, but are hesitant to go full-on with lipstick.

3. Top off with a gloss. Apply a coat of clear gloss after applying the lip color to mute it just a bit, especially if your a fuchsia lippy virgin. It’s better to ease your way into bright colors. Try Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss. It will add a layer of shine while ever so slightly toning down your color.
