Easy Winter Weather Lip Care

Posted by ilovelippy on February 10, 2014

Hi lippy lovers! Miss me? After a long hiatus to take care of my new daughter, I am back with the latest and greatest lippy tips and advice.

Here in the northeast, I’ve been dealing with a polar vortex, snowstorms every three days, and terrible heating that has wreaked havoc on my lips. Harsh winter weather should never prevent your lips from continuing to look their glossy, pink, healthy best. All you need are a few extra products and a couple more minutes to keep your lips looking fresh and kissable. Follow my simple winter lippy routine and kiss flaky chapped lips farewell for good.

Step 1: Moisturize From Within

Yes, lip care is certainly about the conditioning products you put on your lips. But just like your skin, your lips need to be hydrated from the inside out. Drink plenty of water (8 cups a day) with a combination of fruits and veggies with a high concentration of H2O, such as grapefruit, pineapple, blueberries, carrots, celery and zucchini.

Step 2: Exfoliate and Buff

You may use an exfoliating wash on your body in the shower, so why not do the same for your lips? A lip exfoliant is a great way to condition your pucker while removing dead skin and flakes. Sugar Lip Polish by Fresh takes seconds to apply by massaging with the tip of your finger, and contains conditioning ingredients such as shea butter and jojoba oils that leaves lips feeling soft.

Step 3: Your Perfect Lip Balm

Now that you have a fresh base to work with, it’s time to really moisturize. Since winter weather means harsh winds, a mix of cold air and indoor heat, and sun reflecting off the snow, your lip care needs to work triple duty. Aquaphor Lip Repair with SPF 30 seems to start healing lips on impact and continues to heal with ingredients like Vitamin E and Chamomile. You’ll be left with a subtle shine that looks glossy, not balmy. Plus, Aquaphor products are great for even the most sensitive skin (hint: my daughter’s pediatrician recommends only their products for sensitive baby skin).

Step 4: Beautify

Now, the really fun part. Winter lips tend to look dry and pasty, so you’ll want to put a little color back onto your pout. Too much though, and the cracks may start to show (even despite your strict lip regimen!) If you’re not Taylor Swift or Christina Aguilera, a fresh rose-colored moisturizing gloss will do the trick. L’Oreal Colour Riche Gloss in Rich Pink will nourish lips with its Omega-3 and Vitamin E ingredients while providing lips with a soft tint to hide any signs of winter distress.

Moving? Makeup Bag Lippy Essentials

Posted by ilovelippy on November 15, 2011

Lippy lovers, I apologize for being a bit flaky these past few weeks (not on my lips, of course, but with my postings, or lack thereof). I’m taking the plunge and moving out of NYC into the (very) nearby suburbs of New Jersey – and I mean right outside of the tunnel. Of course, this move has occupied much of my time, but as I’ve been boxing up my belongings the past few weeks, it forced me to make the important decision of – what do I need now versus what do I want. What can be boxed up for two to three weeks, and what must I have now, which includes my makeup products, and specifically, lippies. If you’ve found yourself in this predicament (and if you’re anything like me and normally have at least 10 lippies on-hand), here are my recommendations for four must-have makeup bag lippy essentials.

1. A clear gloss. A good, clear gloss does more than make lips shine: It actually gives lips the illusion of looking fuller, since the shine in the gloss reflects light and creates dimension. I recently became slightly addicted to Sephora’s Clear Glossy Gloss. While it doesn’t have the staying power of comparables like Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss or MAC Clear Lipglass, it does have just as much shine and comes in a more non-sticky formula (the reason behind a longer lasting gloss).

2. A moisturizing balm. This may seem like an obvious choice, but many may substitute this staple for a clear gloss. While some glosses do have moisturizing ingredients, they’re still a gloss and their main purpose is not to moisturize. For an anytime balm that creates serious smoothness, both in application and aftermath, try Nivea A Kiss of Smoothness. It leaves lips feeling super nourished with just a hint of shine.

3. A signature, go-to colored gloss. A color I think works on everyone is a sheer coral, which can be layered nicely with your clear gloss if you desire extra shine. This gloss can be worn during the day — in the office or walking around town. Try Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Pur in Pure Coral.

4. A signature, go-to lipstick. You’re bound to be going out at night at least once in the time that you’re on-the-move, so it’s crucial to have one color that can work with almost any outfit choice. Since you could be wearing anything from navy to red to turquoise to berry, now isn’t the best time to pick the most adventurous color. Instead, like choosing a hair color, stick with a shade no more than two hues away from your natural lip color, such as rose or beige. Remember, if you choose a more natural color, you can really play up your eyes with dramatic liner and lashes. Try Revlon Colorburst Lipstick, which leaves lips feeling creamy yet light.

Is Butter-flavored Lip Balm the New Trend?

Posted by ilovelippy on October 19, 2011

The only time I like butter is when it’s melted on my toast. And if there’s too much or if it’s clumpy, I won’t eat it. The site of unmelted butter makes me a bit queasy. So when I discovered that Food Network chef Paula Deen is selling butter-flavored lip balm, I nearly gagged. That’s right, the queen of southern cooking is selling this flavored lip balm in her Savannah, Ga. retail store, in addition to peach cobbler, pecan pie, pumpkin pie and other pie and pudding flavored lip balm. Now as you know from previous posts, I’m not anti-flavored lip balm. I think vanilla, chocolate and even candy-flavored balms can be enjoyable for you and your kissing mate, particularly since we ingest pounds of lip products over our lifetime. But does butter cross the line? Are we promoting this heart-clogging condiment a little too much?

Lippies for Breast Cancer Awareness

Posted by ilovelippy on October 6, 2011

October doesn’t just mean it’s time to change your lip palette for fall (although that is a part of it). It’s national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bringing awareness to a disease that affects 1 in 8 women in the United States, or 12 percent of women, and was diagnosed in over 200,000 women last year. The question then is, why wouldn’t you show your support? I have a simple solution for all of you lippy lovers. During the month of October, instead of purchasing any old lip product, look for ones offered by a variety of brands that support breast cancer awareness and research in some ways. Here are a few to get you started.

During the month of October, Shiseido will donate $5 to CEW Cancer and Careers for every unit of their Shimmering Rouge in Iron Maiden purchase. This is a great color that imparts a subtle shimmer to lips, without drying them out.

Bobbi Brown (a favorite cosmetics company) has created a pink ribbon lip set, which includes their pink lip color and Bellini High Shimmer lip gloss. With each purchase, $10 will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I love the creaminess of Bobbi Brown’s lip products.

Clinique, on the other hand, is working to educate its customers about the risks of breast cancer. With every purchase of any product during October, Clinique is offering a free pink ribbon pin plus an information card with key breast-health tips. These days, I can’t live without my Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Woppin’ Watermelon. It leaves my lips with a natural, very subtle pretty pink hue.

Lastly, a fun, fav lip balm I own and love is helping the cause. Evolution of Smooth (EOS) will donate 5 percent of all U.S. sales of their Smooth Sphere Lip Balm to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Think pink and go for their new Strawberry Sorbet scent.

What are you waiting for? Go help women in need!

Kisses and thoughts to those who have been affecting by this disease,

Chocolate Lip Balm? Mmmm…

Posted by ilovelippy on September 14, 2011

I really love food, and I REALLY love dessert. Fortunately for me, recent studies show that chocolate eaten in moderation (I prefer the dark kind), can benefit the heart, help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol and sharpen your memory. So really, what’s not to love?

If you’re trying to cut back on your sugar consumption, but can’t fully resist, now you can get your two favorite loves — candy and lippy — into one fantastic product sans calories. Hershey’s  has some fun and yummy products that will really have you licking your lips.

Instead of unwrapping a REESE’S Cup, snap open a REESE’S cup shaped lip gloss. Peanut butter goes better with chocolate than jelly, and better on the lips than in the stomach.

If you’re like me and not a huge peanut butter fan, go straight for the chocolate with HERSHEY’s Lip Balm that actually will soften lips with its conditioning oils, while leaving your pucker smelling great.

Just remember, these products are not to be consumed and can not be served with coffee and at your dinner party.

Lippy Highlight: Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Sugar Passion

Posted by ilovelippy on September 9, 2011

It’s no secret one of my favorite lippies on the market today is Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment, with it’s smooth-feel application, incredibly moisturizing ingredients, sun protectant and glossy color. Just in time for one of fall’s big colors for lips — bold red — Fresh presents us with their newest addition to the Sugar Lip Treatment family: passion.

The great thing about this product is it’s all you need: leave your lip balm at home, this product conditions just as well, or better, than your trusty balm; and the color it leaves on lips can replace your gloss or even lipstick. Just remember the more you apply, the bolder and darker the color gets.

So lippy lovers, will you be trying Fresh’s newest sugar lip treatment?

The Perfectionist Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on July 27, 2011

Most of us don’t sit at home while we apply lippy; we’re usually at the office, at dinner, at a bar, at a party…you get the gist. While we may apply our initial coat in front of the bathroom mirror, unless you’ve chosen a long-lasting lippy, it’s inevitable that you’ll need to reapply while on-the-go. If you don’t want to end up with an uneven lip product application, try one of these lippies with a built-in mirror, making application a cinch.

Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Balms, available at Sephora, are available in colors that will take  you on a great escape from Bora Bora (a sheer cherry red) to St. Barth (a sheer lilac sheen) to Waikiki (a sheer bright pink). Not only do these balms have a built-in mirror, but it also hydrates and smooths lips with ingredients like vitamin C and E.

For a lipstick splurge, Guerlain Rouge G Le Brilliant comes in a handy compact which contains a “hidden” mini-mirror that allows for easy application. Available in a variety of shades, the downside is the $45 price tag.

For “mirror-like” shine, look no further than Philosophy Angel Kiss Lip Gloss, in the color of grace. I’m a fan of subtle pink lips, and this product glides on pretty smoothly.

Of course, you could just opt to carry around a separate purse-sized mirror, but what fun is that?

Edible Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on June 28, 2011

Did you know the average woman consumes between four and seven POUNDS of lippy (specifically, lipstick) in her lifetime? No, I’m not talking about TLC’s “Freaky Eaters.” From licking our lips, we inadvertently ingest lippy, totaling an average of 6 pounds during our lifetime.

To ease your mind, lippy is harmless. However, if you’re still disgusted and worried about this, don’t fret — and definitely don’t stop applying lippy. Check out edible lippies that are made from food-grade ingredients. My favorite is The Body Shop Delipscious Tinted Lip Conditioner. Edible ingredients include watermelon and raspberry seed oils, while it moisturizes with coconut oil.

Or, check out Cargo Cosmetics 100 percent natural PlantLove Lipstick. It contains “edible” ingredients including sunflower seed oil and apricot seed powder, so you don’t have to worry about biting your lip when nervous — or flirting with that guy across the bar.

Remember, this isn’t a replacement for your midday snack, and is not to be served as Sunday breakfast.
