Halloween Costumes That Go Great With Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on October 20, 2011

Halloween celebrations will begin next week, when the boys will be slackers with their costumes and the ladies will use this day as an excuse to grab their shortest skirts and tightest top. If you don’t have your costume ready yet, why not build one based on your favorite lippy color? Here are some ideas for trendy Halloween costumes that incorporate lip colors for fall.

1. Vampire: With the popularity of “True Blood” and the premiere of “Breaking Dawn” just weeks away, grab your fake teeth and some blood-red lipstick for the vampire costume. Use powder to make your face appear pale, throw on a bit of black mascara and fill in your lips with a deep red matte lipstick (think female version of Edward Cullen). Try: Tarte for True Blood™ Limited-Edition LipSurgence™ Natural Lip Tint. This red shade, inspired by the hit show, will provide lips with a natural tint of of red. It’ll be a bloody good costume (as they say in England).

2. Sexy Pumpkin. We all know by now that burnt orange, or versions of the shade, are hot for fall. Incorporate this this trend into your costume by dressing as a sexy pumpkin. Monochromatic dressing can be very slimming, and this color on the lips works surprisingly well with almost every skin tone. Top your look with a cute green hat. Think pumpkins can’t be sexy? Skip the puffy figure-unflattering look and instead, dress in orange and carry a cute pumpkin purse or clip a charm onto your purse, like the one designed by Juicy Couture. Last but certainly not least, for your shade of orange lippy, try: Nars lip gloss in Wonder (sheer mandarin orange with pink and gold shimmer).

3. 80s chick. The 80s are back — well, they have been for a while. So why not really channel that carefree, get-up-and-dance decade with a side ponytail, legwarmers and a cut T-shirt, topped with neon makeup and fuchsia lippy. Try: Benefit ultra shines lip shine in back to the fuchsia. The color is a perfect shade of hot pink (80s style) and the shimmer will take lips to the next level. Besides, who doesn’t think glitter and shimmer when thinking about the 80s?

Happy Halloween!

Fall 2011 Lip Color Trends

Posted by ilovelippy on September 8, 2011

As the first week of September soon comes to a close, we’re quickly on our way to cooler temperatures, which means fall is right around the corner. Not knocking down our door just yet, but is pretty close. On the bright side, the beauty of the changing leaves (think burnt orange and red) can be reflected in our lip palettes. Here’s another fun surprise: you don’t really need to open your wallet and start from scratch to be on-trend for the season. Yay for not needing to spend more money!

Here’s a look at what your should be wearing on your lips this fall, as seen on the fall runways of some top designers

Alice + Olivia painted the lips of models a bright, bold red. This look is great for pairing with darker colors of fall fashion, like navy, to really make lips pop. For a good fall look, go for a matte lipstick like NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Mascate (bold red).

Bottega Veneta went the nude route by pairing with a heavy lined eye and colorful fashions like burnt orange. To get the nude lip without looking sickly, try a lipstick with some shine or shimmer, like Korres Mango Butter Lipstick in Nude 33. It’s conditioning ingredients and glossy finish will make lips look healthy — not starved for moisture or color.

Carolina Herrera took the pink lip of summer and transformed it into fall with one simple thing: matte. Take your bright pink lipstick from spring/summer, blot and you’re ready to go. Try Illamasqua Lipstick in Corrupt (matte hot pink) to get this look with one easy swipe.

Gucci played it safe for fall by going with a commonly seen lip palette during this season: dark, deep reddish/brown. As your tan fades, this can be a tough color to pull off, so it may be best left for those with some color to their skin tone (us translucent ladies may want to pass). To get this look, try Stila Long Wear Lip Color in Phenomenal (reddish brown). It’s pencil-like applicator will help you easily hit the outline of your lips.

Jill Stuart played up the color for fall: tangerine. Don’t be scared, surprisingly this is a color many of us can pull off. It goes great with a peachy cheek, just don’t overdose with and orange top. I recommend a gloss or sheer lippy for this color, since it’s already very bold. Once you’ve become a tangerine veteran, you can move onto the lipstick phase. Check out Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in tangerine, which has an added extra of being ever so slightly scented with vanilla.

Are you falling for fall’s colors yet?

Top Sun Protecting Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on May 17, 2011

Memorial Day Weekend is just a week and a half away, which means you’ll probably be hitting the Jersey Shore (or any beach), going to your friend’s pool opening or all-day outdoor barbeque. Since your pasty body probably hasn’t seen the light of day for nine months or so, you’ll slather on sunscreen so you don’t turn into a lobster by day’s end. But did you know that your lips not only can get sunburned too, but the skin on your lips is actually one of the most sensitive areas of your body? It’s crucial, then, to protect your pout with lip care containing SPF of at least 15, just as you would your body. And no, SPF 4 doesn’t count!

Here are my fave sun protectant lip care products.

Lip Balms

Nivea’s A Kiss of Protection sun protection lip care SPF 30 is the ultimate stay-safe-from-the-sun product. The higher protection factor means more protection from UVA/UVB rays for longer, and its natural ingredients such as vitamin E, Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil will keep lips moisturized.

Shiseido’s Sun Protection Lip Treatment SPF 36 also comes out on top with its high protection factor. In fact, Shiseido’s whole line of sun care products will keep you protected for much of the day.

Lip Color

NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment contains SPF 15 to protect lips from the sun’s harmful rays, as well as moisturizers like mango butter to condition dry lips. The product comes in several options of subtle color to fit your skin tone.

Renowned makeup artist Paula Dorf’s Lip Color Sheer Tint with SPF 15 also comes in a variety of color to suit any taste. I prefer the Luscious color for a more natural, flushed look. Paula and her products are loved by Jessica Simpson, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Garner and Renee Zellweger, among many others.

And, if you need a beach bag to store your lippies and other items, I love The Gap’s Sequin Strap Straw Tote, with sparkly silver straps. It’s big enough to carry all your goods, has inner and outer pockets for convenience and can be wiped clean.

Promise me you’ll stay safe in the sun!

Moisturizing Lip Pencils

Posted by ilovelippy on April 12, 2011

I’m not a lip pencil person — I usually prefer sticking to glosses or other lip tints and treatments. But when I was at the Clinique counter this weekend purchasing new lippy (so I could get their bonus, of course), I noticed a new item that had me curious (below). So, if you’re willing to experiment and try something a little different than your normal gloss in a tube, check out one of these moisturizing lip pencils. The color will last, probably longer than your normal lippy, and these pencils have moisturizing ingredients, so they can — and should — be used on the whole lip, not just to outline.

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm (try saying that 10 times quickly) looks like a pencil, but acts like a moisturizing, tinted balm. The product contains mango and shea butters, and the colors — from Richer Raisin to Super Strawberry — are more sheen than matte.

Sue Devitt Lip Intensifier Pencil contains Aloe Vera to condition lips and Hibiscus Extract, which imparts antioxidant properties to skin. Sue recommends using with her Lip Enhancing Gloss, but with the pretty colors available and moisturizing properties, you can certainly use on its own.

Lastly, Nars cosmetics introduced a new product to complement their Velvet Matte Lip Pencil: the Nars Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil (since gloss is in for spring/summer). Resembling a coloring tool we used as kids, this pencil contains vitamin E and other moisturizers so that color stays — and stays looking beautiful. I’m such a fan of Nars products, I love that you get the look of lipstick with a skinny pencil you could keep in your pocket.

Go on and try something new!

Matching Lippy to Your Outfit

Posted by ilovelippy on April 4, 2011

Recently, I spotted a picture of the fabulous, fierce, and after dropping many sizes, super fashionable Jennifer Hudson during a performance for AOL Music’s “Sessions.” She looked amazing, wearing a skin-tight black bustier, girly hot pink mini skirt, and matching “it” lip color of the moment — hot pink. The question then popped up: should you match your lip color to your outfit?

The answer is YES, it is acceptable these days! But certain rules do apply.

1. Avoid wearing bright lip color and a matching bright top. Jennifer works the look by balancing her skirt and lips with a black top. Do not match your lippy to your top half, which includes a dress. For a hot pink lippy like Jennifer Hudson’s, try Dior Addict Lipstick in Collection 865 (fuchsia) or Reflet 763 (sheer hot pink). It’s creamy and hydrating, so it won’t wear off in weird places, and has plumping ingredients!

2. Match your lippy to your accessories! There’s nothing wrong choosing a pretty beige shade for your lips and shoes, or going fire engine red with your pout and purse. Again, it’s all about minimal matching. Try Nars lipstick containing moisturizing vitamin E in Belle de Jour (sheer nude beige) or Blonde Venus (satin cool beige), and pair with your favorite pumps!

3. Nail colors for spring are just as bold as lip colors, so why not make a real statement? Lips and nails are far enough away from each other, you’ll be able to avoid a tacky look. While not my favorite, if you’re up for trying something new, go for a coral lippy and nail polish. Try Essie‘s tart deco, which is a creamy coral and Revlon Super Lustrous lip gloss in Coral Reef, which gives a high shine look.

Lippy for Your Skin Tone

Posted by ilovelippy on March 26, 2011

Whether you’re at CVS, Sephora or the beauty counter of your favorite department store, there are so many lippy choices out there, how is one to know which color to choose? What a predicament to be in! While it certainly matters what purpose you’re buying the lippy for (work? an upcoming date? a wedding? your best friend’s baby shower?) you may just want to take a step back before selecting a color you like. First, think about your skin tone. Bring this guide with you to your next lippy shopping outing!

Fair skin: Unless you’re going for a Twilight look, bold red may not be your cup of tea. Instead, opt for shades of coral or rosy pink. This will brighten your complexion. Try: Nars Lip Gloss in Super Orgasm or Pillow Talk.

Medium skin: Medium skin-toned gals can be a bit more bold than us fair skinned ladies (which includes me). Try shades of berry or rich browns and caramel. Try: Clinique Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 in Fireberry, Stellar Plum or Brandy Twist.

Dark skin: You lucky gals! Go bold or go home, right? Experiment with cool colors such as rich red, fun fuchsias or light coffee. Try: Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss (available at Sephora, or take a trip to London!) in Succubus (blood red) or Fume (deep rose red).

So, there you have it! Have fun with your lippy purchases, and don’t be afraid to experiment. If you really like a color, just ignore the above and go for it. Wear your lippy — don’t let it wear you. As Gwyneth Paltrow said, “Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.”
