Moving? Makeup Bag Lippy Essentials

Posted by ilovelippy on November 15, 2011

Lippy lovers, I apologize for being a bit flaky these past few weeks (not on my lips, of course, but with my postings, or lack thereof). I’m taking the plunge and moving out of NYC into the (very) nearby suburbs of New Jersey – and I mean right outside of the tunnel. Of course, this move has occupied much of my time, but as I’ve been boxing up my belongings the past few weeks, it forced me to make the important decision of – what do I need now versus what do I want. What can be boxed up for two to three weeks, and what must I have now, which includes my makeup products, and specifically, lippies. If you’ve found yourself in this predicament (and if you’re anything like me and normally have at least 10 lippies on-hand), here are my recommendations for four must-have makeup bag lippy essentials.

1. A clear gloss. A good, clear gloss does more than make lips shine: It actually gives lips the illusion of looking fuller, since the shine in the gloss reflects light and creates dimension. I recently became slightly addicted to Sephora’s Clear Glossy Gloss. While it doesn’t have the staying power of comparables like Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss or MAC Clear Lipglass, it does have just as much shine and comes in a more non-sticky formula (the reason behind a longer lasting gloss).

2. A moisturizing balm. This may seem like an obvious choice, but many may substitute this staple for a clear gloss. While some glosses do have moisturizing ingredients, they’re still a gloss and their main purpose is not to moisturize. For an anytime balm that creates serious smoothness, both in application and aftermath, try Nivea A Kiss of Smoothness. It leaves lips feeling super nourished with just a hint of shine.

3. A signature, go-to colored gloss. A color I think works on everyone is a sheer coral, which can be layered nicely with your clear gloss if you desire extra shine. This gloss can be worn during the day — in the office or walking around town. Try Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Pur in Pure Coral.

4. A signature, go-to lipstick. You’re bound to be going out at night at least once in the time that you’re on-the-move, so it’s crucial to have one color that can work with almost any outfit choice. Since you could be wearing anything from navy to red to turquoise to berry, now isn’t the best time to pick the most adventurous color. Instead, like choosing a hair color, stick with a shade no more than two hues away from your natural lip color, such as rose or beige. Remember, if you choose a more natural color, you can really play up your eyes with dramatic liner and lashes. Try Revlon Colorburst Lipstick, which leaves lips feeling creamy yet light.

Top Sun Protecting Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on May 17, 2011

Memorial Day Weekend is just a week and a half away, which means you’ll probably be hitting the Jersey Shore (or any beach), going to your friend’s pool opening or all-day outdoor barbeque. Since your pasty body probably hasn’t seen the light of day for nine months or so, you’ll slather on sunscreen so you don’t turn into a lobster by day’s end. But did you know that your lips not only can get sunburned too, but the skin on your lips is actually one of the most sensitive areas of your body? It’s crucial, then, to protect your pout with lip care containing SPF of at least 15, just as you would your body. And no, SPF 4 doesn’t count!

Here are my fave sun protectant lip care products.

Lip Balms

Nivea’s A Kiss of Protection sun protection lip care SPF 30 is the ultimate stay-safe-from-the-sun product. The higher protection factor means more protection from UVA/UVB rays for longer, and its natural ingredients such as vitamin E, Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil will keep lips moisturized.

Shiseido’s Sun Protection Lip Treatment SPF 36 also comes out on top with its high protection factor. In fact, Shiseido’s whole line of sun care products will keep you protected for much of the day.

Lip Color

NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment contains SPF 15 to protect lips from the sun’s harmful rays, as well as moisturizers like mango butter to condition dry lips. The product comes in several options of subtle color to fit your skin tone.

Renowned makeup artist Paula Dorf’s Lip Color Sheer Tint with SPF 15 also comes in a variety of color to suit any taste. I prefer the Luscious color for a more natural, flushed look. Paula and her products are loved by Jessica Simpson, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Garner and Renee Zellweger, among many others.

And, if you need a beach bag to store your lippies and other items, I love The Gap’s Sequin Strap Straw Tote, with sparkly silver straps. It’s big enough to carry all your goods, has inner and outer pockets for convenience and can be wiped clean.

Promise me you’ll stay safe in the sun!

More Lippy Recos. from My Friends

Posted by ilovelippy on March 15, 2011

One thing I love about writing the response you get. Well, after reading my posts, my well-informed friends very kindly offered up their opinion on some fave lippys in the balm and gloss categories. So here they are!

Lip Balms:

For color, a beautiful glossy shine and moisturizing ingredients such as Shea Butter and vitamin E, friend 1 recommends Nivea Lip Care tubes. I love the glossy feel without the stickiness. This product is a triple threat.

She also recommends any one of a variety of lip balm offered by Burt’s Bees. Now, I’ve tried Burt’s Bees, and personally think it takes several go-arounds (of the lips) to get that smooth, moisturized feeling. But all lips are not created equal. I recommend the balm with SPF, especially as the weather starts to warm.

Lips are highly prone to sunburn, but often left unprotected. Not to freak you out, but you can get cancer in your lower or upper lip caused by severe, repeated sunburn. Protect and respect the lips please!

Lip Gloss:

I had mentioned my love for L’Oreal’s Infallible Never Fail Lipstick. Friend 2 mentioned that while she, too, loved this line of products, the lipsticks can be too bold for the novice lippy owner. She recommends the Infallible Never Fail Lipgloss: it’s even a plumper (which we know I love!)

This product keeps the long-lasting promise, while adding that glossy shimmer that says kiss me.

So there you have it lippy lovers. What are you favorite products? Would love to know!

Kisses,
