Birthday Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on November 2, 2011

While some people tend to shy away from birthday parties and the pressure of being the center of attention, I for one love a good celebration. And while being the center of the world for a day can be fun, it’s really my lips that I want to be the center of attention. As I celebrate the fact that I am entering my 30s on November 7th, which will be preceded by a “welcome to my 30s” bash this Friday, one thing is for sure. In the words of the fabulous Real Housewives of New Jersey resident Melissa Gorga, I want to put my lips “on display, on display, on display.” With that, here, my suggestions for birthday lippy for a standout pout.

Start Shimmering. Just because we’re aging doesn’t mean our lips need to. The easiest way to reclaim your youth is to add as much glitter and sparkle to your look as possible. Fortunately, we’re able to do that without needing to shop at Claire’s. As you’re dancing into the evening, your lips will shine like the disco ball lights. Try Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss in the color that best matches your outfit (I love Pink Sequin for my fair skin). This product packs in some serious sparkle.

Be Bold. There is no better time to try out that fire-engine red you’ve been dying to apply than for a special occasion like your birthday. Bright red lips is the first way to get immediately noticed for all the right reasons. Go for a long-lasting wear, since you’ll be partying into the wee hours of the morning. Try: Christian Dior, Rouge Dior in Rouge Blossom. It won’t wear off easily and will keep lips smooth — not cracking — which is crucial for red lipstick.

Stay Simple. If you can’t be bothered with a fussy look while you’re kissing cheeks and sipping cocktails, go for a simple, clear shine that keeps lips looking moisturized and healthy, without a lot of work. Try DuWop Lip Venom, which imparts a natural, clear shine while seriously plumping lips with ingredients including cinnamon, wintergreen and ginger.

Halloween Costumes That Go Great With Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on October 20, 2011

Halloween celebrations will begin next week, when the boys will be slackers with their costumes and the ladies will use this day as an excuse to grab their shortest skirts and tightest top. If you don’t have your costume ready yet, why not build one based on your favorite lippy color? Here are some ideas for trendy Halloween costumes that incorporate lip colors for fall.

1. Vampire: With the popularity of “True Blood” and the premiere of “Breaking Dawn” just weeks away, grab your fake teeth and some blood-red lipstick for the vampire costume. Use powder to make your face appear pale, throw on a bit of black mascara and fill in your lips with a deep red matte lipstick (think female version of Edward Cullen). Try: Tarte for True Blood™ Limited-Edition LipSurgence™ Natural Lip Tint. This red shade, inspired by the hit show, will provide lips with a natural tint of of red. It’ll be a bloody good costume (as they say in England).

2. Sexy Pumpkin. We all know by now that burnt orange, or versions of the shade, are hot for fall. Incorporate this this trend into your costume by dressing as a sexy pumpkin. Monochromatic dressing can be very slimming, and this color on the lips works surprisingly well with almost every skin tone. Top your look with a cute green hat. Think pumpkins can’t be sexy? Skip the puffy figure-unflattering look and instead, dress in orange and carry a cute pumpkin purse or clip a charm onto your purse, like the one designed by Juicy Couture. Last but certainly not least, for your shade of orange lippy, try: Nars lip gloss in Wonder (sheer mandarin orange with pink and gold shimmer).

3. 80s chick. The 80s are back — well, they have been for a while. So why not really channel that carefree, get-up-and-dance decade with a side ponytail, legwarmers and a cut T-shirt, topped with neon makeup and fuchsia lippy. Try: Benefit ultra shines lip shine in back to the fuchsia. The color is a perfect shade of hot pink (80s style) and the shimmer will take lips to the next level. Besides, who doesn’t think glitter and shimmer when thinking about the 80s?

Happy Halloween!

Wear-resistant Lipstick: Guest Blog Post

Posted by ilovelippy on May 25, 2011

Kayla Block, owner of Makeup Deal of the Day, shared her thoughts on long-lasting lippy with her guest post for i love lippy. Check it out, below!

If you are wearing a neutral or nude lipstick, having it rub off may not be a big deal. But finding a wear-resistant lipstick is especially important if you’re wearing an intense color like red.

How Red Lipsticks are Made

Lipstick is made from waxes and pigments along with oil, fragrance, and sometimes alcohol. Most lipsticks will also contain some kind of anti-oxidant, often in the form of vitamin E, to keep the lipstick from going bad.

Some newer lipsticks put the pigment into a silicone, rather than a wax base in order to create a longer wearing formula. The lipsticks that come in a cream tube that are usually applied with a sponge, and usually wear for 6-12 hours are generally made with a silicon base. The silicon makes a thin film that adheres to the lips. These can be quite drying, so they usually come with some kind of gloss or lip balm that is meant to be applied over them. This also helps you not have a seriously matte finish.

Why Cheap Lipsticks Usually Have Poor Pigment

Cheap lipstick generally uses cheap wax and not much pigment. So you apply it and it just doesn’t last very long. Carnauba wax is the most expensive form of wax that can be used in lipsticks. It’s made from the leaves of the carnauba palm tree. Cheaper lipsticks will use beeswax or candalilla wax, which doesn’t wear as well. Also, in cheap lipsticks, often the pigment is not as finely milled, so the color isn’t dispersed as well. The best lipsticks use high quality ingredients for a beautiful, long-wearing finish.

Selecting Red Lipsticks for Your Skintone

Many women feel uncomfortable with red lipsticks. They certainly do make a bold statement, moreso than other lipstick colors. If you’re going to wear a bold red, keep your eyes and blusher more neutral. At any given time, you really only want one strong statement on your face. You may think that strong, smokey eyes would be balanced by bold lips, but actually, that will overwhelm your face.

If you’re pale, you may look best with red lipstick that has blue undertones. If you have olive undertones in your complexion, you may want to look for warmer reds.

If you end up with a lipstick that doesn’t seem to be the right color for you, you can try blending it with a lip brush when applying it your lips. This will help you get a custom tone just for you.

Lipsticks with shimmer don’t tend to last as long, but can provide a softer look if you’re not yet feeling bold about red lipstick.

Girl’s Night Out Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on May 5, 2011

Hi lippy lovers! After a two week hiatus due to an unexpected surgery, I am back and better than ever. Hopefully your lips have not gone dry or bare since then!

So, tomorrow is Friday night (cue Rebecca Black), which means in the next two days, it’s bound to be girl’s night out, all you single ladies (cue Beyonce. Yes, I’m creating your playlist for you). When you’re out with the girls, specifically if you’re single and more than ready to mingle, your lippy selection can be the difference between kissing your pillow goodnight and kissing the cute guy buying you dirty martinis good night. Just follow a few girl’s night out lippy application rules for the latter to happen.

Rule #1: Go big — and bold — or stay home. Girl’s night out is a time to let loose and have fun with the support of your favorite female friends. Experiment and try a new, exciting lip color — the trick is to avoid overkill. Here’s a little tip: According to a recent survey conducted by L’Oreal Paris and Harris Interactive, nearly 70 percent of men associate women in red lipstick with positive sentiments like being sexy, confident and successful. So go for it! Try Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture SPF 15 in Le Rouge for a sexy, sultry look.

Rule #2: Don’t worry about reapplication with long-lasting lipwear. The last thing you want to do when you’re dancing on top of the bar is to stop mid-Gaga to reapply your lippy. Instead, apply a long-lasting lipwear before you show your ID so you can just sit back and enjoy the night.  Try Stila Long Wear Lip Color in one of their fabulous hues — from Outrageous to to Intriguing to Adorable — depending on your mood. I love the application of this product, as it glides on easy.

Rule #3: Make your lips — and personality — shine. I love love love a seriously glossy shine, and girl’s night out is the perfect opportunity for the wet lip look. When it comes to ultimate shine, simply turn to none other than MAC Lipglass. It imparts a glass-like finish and comes in a variety of tints. Try Atmospheric, which is a baby pink with pink and blue shimmer; the blue undertones will help make your teeth look whiter.

Rule #4: Use a straw! It will eliminate the need for constant application.
