Moving? Makeup Bag Lippy Essentials

Posted by ilovelippy on November 15, 2011

Lippy lovers, I apologize for being a bit flaky these past few weeks (not on my lips, of course, but with my postings, or lack thereof). I’m taking the plunge and moving out of NYC into the (very) nearby suburbs of New Jersey – and I mean right outside of the tunnel. Of course, this move has occupied much of my time, but as I’ve been boxing up my belongings the past few weeks, it forced me to make the important decision of – what do I need now versus what do I want. What can be boxed up for two to three weeks, and what must I have now, which includes my makeup products, and specifically, lippies. If you’ve found yourself in this predicament (and if you’re anything like me and normally have at least 10 lippies on-hand), here are my recommendations for four must-have makeup bag lippy essentials.

1. A clear gloss. A good, clear gloss does more than make lips shine: It actually gives lips the illusion of looking fuller, since the shine in the gloss reflects light and creates dimension. I recently became slightly addicted to Sephora’s Clear Glossy Gloss. While it doesn’t have the staying power of comparables like Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss or MAC Clear Lipglass, it does have just as much shine and comes in a more non-sticky formula (the reason behind a longer lasting gloss).

2. A moisturizing balm. This may seem like an obvious choice, but many may substitute this staple for a clear gloss. While some glosses do have moisturizing ingredients, they’re still a gloss and their main purpose is not to moisturize. For an anytime balm that creates serious smoothness, both in application and aftermath, try Nivea A Kiss of Smoothness. It leaves lips feeling super nourished with just a hint of shine.

3. A signature, go-to colored gloss. A color I think works on everyone is a sheer coral, which can be layered nicely with your clear gloss if you desire extra shine. This gloss can be worn during the day — in the office or walking around town. Try Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Pur in Pure Coral.

4. A signature, go-to lipstick. You’re bound to be going out at night at least once in the time that you’re on-the-move, so it’s crucial to have one color that can work with almost any outfit choice. Since you could be wearing anything from navy to red to turquoise to berry, now isn’t the best time to pick the most adventurous color. Instead, like choosing a hair color, stick with a shade no more than two hues away from your natural lip color, such as rose or beige. Remember, if you choose a more natural color, you can really play up your eyes with dramatic liner and lashes. Try Revlon Colorburst Lipstick, which leaves lips feeling creamy yet light.

My Favorite Shimmer Lippies

Posted by ilovelippy on July 18, 2011

Nighttime is the perfect excuse to break out your most shimmery lippies (and body glitter, if that’s your thing). I love shimmer lip gloss because it draws serious attention to your lips, gives lips dimension and can make lips appear bigger, since light will reflect off your lips. It’s time to stock up, and take note of my picks for shimmery lippy, with various applicators.

You can easily see the sparkles in Giorgio Armani lip shimmer lip gloss, which comes in a variety of color families, including  brown, red, beige, pink, coral and plum — they’ve covered all their bases. This is a great, non-sticky item.

Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Gloss is not just for tweens and teens. The glosses impart a subtle, but noticeable diamond-like shimmer on lips, and are pleasant-smelling, leaving lips kissable. Available in pale pink, golden peach and fuchsia.

YSL Golden Gloss Shimmering Lip Gloss is left for those who want to seriously shine. This gloss contains 24 carat gold flecks for a super reflective look, and of the three products, has the most range in color. I’m a personal fan of the Golden Satin color.

Shine on.

Wedding Lippy

Posted by ilovelippy on May 13, 2011

The warmer weather brings on wedding season, which the royal wedding kicked off a few weeks ago. Planning your own wedding (or just daydreaming about one in the future?) Here’s my advice when it comes to selecting and wearing lippy for your wedding!

Kate Middleton reportedly did her own makeup, not to save money, of course, but because she wanted to look like naturally beautiful self on her special day. Heed this advice, ladies. You don’t want to look like you’re playing dress up by wearing a super bright or bold lip color you’ve never worn. Even if you have previously worn red, fuchsia, berry or orange lip color, I still advise against it. It will immediately date your pictures, and draw attention to your lips instead of your dress. Instead, opt for a soft baby pink or sheer coral color. For my wedding, I wore Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Pur in Pure Coral, which was a sheer gloss with a pretty hint of color, and non-sticky. You can also try Stila Silk Shimmer Gloss, which is a pink gloss with a little shimmer that also moisturizes.

Notice that my above recommendations are glosses? I advise against lipstick for a bride. You’re going to be doing a LOT of smiling for pictures, friends and family, so you don’t want to worry about lipstick on the teeth, fading lipstick, cracking lips or related issues. Choose a gloss that has moisturizers in it, so your pout looks healthy throughout the day. It will also eliminate the need to carry an additional moisturizer. Neutrogena’s MoistureShine Gloss is super conditioning with it’s moisturizing ingredients such as Acai and Goji, and is non-sticky. Pick up one in Healthy Blush or Healthy Peach. This will also keep your lips conditioned for that big post-I Do kiss.
